Woven – a traditional process where the pile and the backing yarns are woven together, offering unrivalled strength and stability. You can spot a woven carpet by the warp and weft threads on the reverse. Axminster and Wilton carpets are both woven. Wilton – the oldest method of weaving, offering limited colour choice but a variety of textures. Axminster - A way of weaving carpets with a great pattern definition and a multitude of colours – most Axminsters are patterned. Tufted – tufts of yarn are punched through a backing membrane and secured by latex. Tufting is a less time consuming and therefore less costly process than weaving but it doesn’t mean that the construction of the carpet is noticeably less solid. Loop – Method of production where the tufts are looped back into the backing thus creating a textured effect of varying degrees. Twist – a type of carpet using highly twisted yarn to create a textured surface. The effect of the twisted yarn is to give a slightly two tone effect and affords a greater degree of practicality for a plain carpet. Velvet – a straighter yarn with the cut ends at the top giving a soft velvety feel. They dye very well giving a more finite colour but the soft texture can result in shading. Berber - Traditionally berbers were made of natural coloured wools but what we refer to as a berber these days is a heather mix yarn with a homespun appearance. Heather – carpet made from yarn with more than one fibre colouring, giving a flecked, multicoloured effect. |

Selection When choosing a carpet first look at the colour – it is a personal thing and is important to choose shades that you can live with rather than something” in fashion”.
Having decided on colour you will discover many different shades are available in every colour so it is vitally important to borrow samples, take them home and look at them in the room you are carpeting in natural and artificial light. Next consider location – high traffic areas such as lounge, hall, stairs & landing need something harder wearing than a bedroom for example. Since few of us have an unlimited budget cost usually comes into the equation but remember... ... top quality carpets will always repay your investment. You can create an illusion of space by using light colours whereas stronger colours can cosy up a large room and patterns will give an appearance of depth. |
